Position Summary: Piikani Lands Staff Crew Members will work as part of a team of 6-8 people, including 2 leaders, to complete a variety of natural resource and community projects.  Duties include establishing and maintaining good working relationships with MCC regional staff, project technical advisors, volunteers, and fellow crew members, as well as perform designated duties with a positive attitude.  They will work under the supervision of the Pikanii Lands Crew Leaders and MCC Regional Program Manager.  Members will receive two weeks of orientation and technical skills training, followed by 11 weeks of field-based project work, taking place on tribal and public lands. Though most projects will be “day projects”, meaning the members will go home at night, there will likely be a couple of weeks where the crew will camp out overnight.


$10 per hour


Job Duties:

  • Perform physical labor field work as a crew on various natural resource and community service projects. Projects may range from trail construction and maintenance, weed eradication, mapping of weeds via GPS, fence construction, landscaping, streambank stabilization, native seed collection, planting trees, and more.
  • Daily use of hand tools such as shovels, rakes, wheelbarrows, pulaskis, and mcleods.
  • Arrive on time for all planned work duties, unless previously discussed with crew leader.
  • When camping out overnight, participate in camp-life duties such as water filtration, meal preparation, and washing dishes.
  • Ensure safety is the top priority during all MCC activities and projects and promote a ‘culture of safety’
  • Accomplish project goals to the standards and satisfaction of the MCC, Crew Leaders, and project partners/technical advisors
  • Follow all MCC policies and procedures contributing to the overall functioning of the crew and creating a healthy and supportive crew environment
  • Perform designated crew roles of crew journalist, tool or vehicle swamper
  • Willingly participate in all elements of the MCC program, education, and crew activities to the best of his/her ability
  • Promote a positive public image for the MCC by wearing the MCC uniform and acting in a professional and respectful manner at all times
  • Work alongside youth and adult volunteers on projects and provide leadership when possible
  • Exhibit a strong work ethic and positive service ethic throughout the term of service


Administrative Duties:

  • Complete and submit timesheets and other paperwork in a timely manner
  • Provide information for evaluation of Crew Leaders, including both positive feedback and areas of potential improvement



  • 18-24 years old, Montana resident                          
  • Ability to hike 3-12 miles per day in terrain that can be steep, rocky or uneven, often wearing a 45lb backpack while carrying tools and sometimes backpacking with full packs of 60 – 70lbs
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds repeatedly and use hand and power tools
  • Ability to pass a Criminal History Check
  • Seasonal availability; May to August
  • Strong service ethic and desire to serve the community and the environment
  • Willingness to work long, hard hours in all weather conditions
  • Ability to be away on overnight trips for up to 10 days at a time, camping in a tent, 1-2 times during the summer
