Montana Conservation Corps (MCC) is a nationally-recognized nonprofit that instills hope and purpose in a new generation of young leaders who get things done to improve our lands and communities. Through hands-on service, our participants, including teens, young adults, and veterans, develop the self-awareness, grit, people skills, connection to place, and respect for their own power to enact change, to be leaders, stewards of the land, and engaged citizens who improve their communities. In turn, these young leaders improve hundreds of miles of trails and tens of thousands of acres of habitat each year. In 2017, over 600 youth, from local communities and reservations, and recruited nationally into our AmeriCorps program, will serve on a crew or as an intern for 3 to 11 months. MCC is based in Bozeman, MT, with regional offices in Bozeman, Helena, Kalispell, and Missoula. We work throughout the Northern Rockies and Plains.


About the Position

Primary duties of the Senior Youth Crew Leader (SYCL) include training of Youth and Field Crew Leaders, field visitation and logistical support to help insure the successful completion of MCC projects and programming, and logistical support to ensure regional operations run smoothly.  The SYCL, under the supervision of the Youth Program Manager, works with all regional staff and must maintain communication between the office and the field.   The SYCL helps ensure that MCC policies and procedures are followed by all members and leaders while establishing and maintaining a good working relationship with project partners, parents/guardians, and community organizations. The SYCL will be called upon to lead or join an existing crew when necessary.  The SYCL is an AmeriCorps member and is entitled to the benefit package offered all AmeriCorps members. This position should be viewed not as a 9-5 job but as an experience where long hours and extended time away from home, often in remote locations on difficult terrain and in all weather condition, are to be expected.  SYCLs must be self-motivated and flexible in order to meet the changing needs of the position. This position will have recurring access to vulnerable populations.

Programmatic Duties

  • Ensure safety is the top priority during all MCC activities and projects; promote a ‘culture of safety’
  • Follow and model all MCC policies and procedures and assure crew compliance
  • Assist staff in planning and implementing trainings for members and leaders
  • Facilitate and deliver MCC education components to leaders and crews in the field
  • Assist regional staff with recruitment of youth program participants, including in-school visits and reaching out to youth-serving organizations, as well as assisting with youth member interviews, as needed
  • Assist in planning, coordinating and leading volunteer service opportunities
  • Assist in project logistics, including coordinating the regional tool cache, assisting with regional inventory, and communicating with project partners from the office
  • Provide technical assistance and guidance to crews and leaders as needed
  • Support Youth Crew Leaders with leadership or crew dynamic challenges and help facilitate debriefs 

Administrative Duties


  • Maintain accurate crew, project, program, and safety records
  • Maintain accurate inventory and records
  • Complete and submit required reports and other paperwork in a timely manner before end of term of service
  • Provide information for evaluation of Youth Crew Leaders and Youth Crew Members; including both positive feedback and areas of potential improvement



  • High school degree, GED, or willingness to work towards obtaining a GED
  • Minimum age of 21
  • US Citizenship or lawful permanent US Resident
  • Valid driver’s license, ability to pass a Motor Vehicle Records check
  • At least two years of college or military experience, or equivalent work experience
  • Ability to hike 3-12 miles per day in rugged terrain, often wearing a 45lb backpack and carrying tools
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds repeatedly and use hand and power tools
  • Ability to pass a National Service Criminal History Check
  • Available for duration of entire term of service; commitment to completing term
  • Current Wilderness Advanced First Aid certification, or higher
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Strong service ethic and desire to serve the community and the environment
  • Willingness to work long, hard hours in all weather conditions; ability to be away on overnight trips for up to two weeks at a time

Helpful Experience

  • Previous Corps Experience
  • Leadership and/or teaching experience, skills, or training
  • Technical and outdoor skills, including camp craft, trail work, and knowledge of power and hand tools
  • Administrative experience
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite
